Planned
Ferrux
A long-term exploration of a Rust-first desktop and system environment.
Project overview
Overview
Ferrux is the long-term Rust desktop and system vision behind the smaller Ferrum projects.
It is a north star rather than an active implementation project. For now, it exists as architecture notes and a direction that the more focused tools can gradually make realistic.
Current strategy
Why Ferrux remains parked
Ferrux is large enough to absorb years of effort without producing a finished artifact. Starting it too early would make it difficult to preserve momentum or validate the smaller ideas that belong inside it.
Feo, Ferrisle, Ferrule, Ferroforge, Ferrost, and Ferrux-grid each provide a narrower place to build skills, test assumptions, and finish useful work first.
Current target
Architecture notes only
The present goal is to capture useful architectural ideas without creating implementation pressure or treating Ferrux as the active project.
Prerequisites
When implementation becomes reasonable
- Feo has an MVP.
- Ferrisle powers the personal site.
- Ferrule is useful in real projects.
- Ferroforge replaces the current scaffold kit.
- Ferrost or Ferrostide provides a small useful workflow.
- Ferrux-grid has a pure, stable layout engine.
Boundaries
Non-goals for now
- Kernel work.
- A full desktop environment.
- Compositor implementation.
- Package-manager design.
- Trying to replace Linux.
- Treating Ferrux as the main active project.
Next action
Next step
Keep the architecture notes organized and allow the smaller projects to determine which Ferrux ideas are worth revisiting later.
